Served

My thesis collection is exploring the class relationship between tennis players and waitresses who exist in the same space, that is a country club, representing opposing classes. And how their uniforms are costumes in a way because of the performative aspects of daily life in both occupations. There is a blurred line between port and service, since they are both actions that are looked at as “for the viewer” and it is seen as a performance.Keeping the idea of costumes and performance in mind, I will be using the uniforms to create a sense of non-reality and kitschy take on their daily clothes, inspired by drapings of Comme des Garcons, I merge together one tennis and one waitress uniform. By placing on the front, in the seams, at the hem it creates an irony and reiterates the idea of performance and class. I made over 50 different drapes until I was confident in the 10 that will complete my line up. I found that the best drapes were ones that had two different textiles or a small garment added to
a bigger garment.
